１８７９年、１２月１８日（明日が誕生日☆）、スイスのベルン近郊のミュンヘンブーフゼーにパウル・クレーは生まれました。父は音楽教師、母も声楽を学んだ音楽一家でした。
世代的には、フランツ・マルク、ルートヴィッヒ・キルヒナー、ピカソ、レジェ、ジョルジュ・ブラックらと同世代人です。
音楽の道（バイオリン）へか、あるいは美術の道へ行くかを悩んだというエピソードをよく聞きますが、彼の日記によれば、バイオリニストになろうと思ったことはないようです。しかし、彼の作品と音楽を切り離すことはできません。絵を描く時のイメージ一環として音楽は必要不可欠だったのです。
絵によりますが、基本的に彼の絵は透明感をとても感じます。”油絵の画家の絵”という雰囲気があまり感じられない不思議な作品群です。
技法的には、色々な方法をためしているマルチな画家で、ジュート（昔お米などを入れていた、ごつい布）に油彩、銅版画、水彩など、クレーの有名な作品はひとつの技法だけではないのが特徴です。
１９２１年にはワイマールの
バウハウスの教授に就任しています。他には、カンディンスキーなどが教授をしていた、なんともうらやましい学校です。その頃のドイツはヒトラーに牛耳られていたので、１１年後には閉鎖されてしまいました。バウハウスは２０世紀初頭に生まれた画期的なデザインとして多大な与えました。
その時の講義の内容が「
造形思考」という本にもなっています。
